Dear Members and Friends
Interesting developments are taking place on the medico-legal scene in South Africa. For the first time different, but equally important role players are approached to participate in seminars and become members of our Society. As you know, it is not easy to become a member and the requirements are spelt out on our website www.samls.co.za. Our Aims and Objects as in our Constitution and Rules are clear and honourable. Every newsletter published will also be available on our website. Please advise us on how to improve our website by e-mail or fax. One of the ideas was to formulate a bibliography about important and relevant and authoritive references to be used in medico-legal reports and court cases. Another suggestion was to formulate a code of conduct and set of ethical rules and lay down guidelines for the format of medico legal reports, as well as a reasonable remuneration.
The Exco proposal is to appoint steering committees about these matters to report back to the general meeting and use their conclusion as a standpoint of the SAMLS which should be accepted as the only and real authority for RAF, insurance companies and patients or clients. Just imagine the significance of this and how easy it would be for the cost consultants to make a realistic estimate of costs to reserve a medical specialist as a witness in court. Just imagine what it would mean that medico-legal reports should be paid according to the rules of the SAMLS.
We are proud and excited to present to you the programme for the seminar about Third Party matters on 11 May 2002 at the Protea Midrand Hotel, from 09:00 - 13:00. PLEASE DIARISE THIS DATE CAREFULLY.
