Dear Colleagues and Friends

The year 2005 already is on its way and I really hope that your new year resolutions start to realise.

As Executive Committee of the South African Medico Legal Society we are already busy with the arrangements for the next seminar in May 2005. As subject we wanted an interesting one, that lived in our members minds. We therefore thought it prudent to anticipate drastic changes looming for medical practitioners in the way they will be allowed to practice in future. With the pharmaceutical tetanic legal battles in mind, we came therefore to the following arrangements for our first seminar of the year 2005.

SUBJECT:- Rights and Obligations of Medical Practitioners in the light of our Constitution

PLACE: Board Room of Rooth and Wessels, Brooklyn, Pretoria

DATE: 07 May 2005, first Saturday in May

TIME: 09:00 – 13:00

SPEAKERS: Two specialists on constitutional law in that matter

One advocate with practical knowledge of the recent happenings in the pharmaceutical field

One academic who could enlighten us about the principles of constitutional law in that matter

The names of these eminent speakers will be revealed later after confirmation with them.

We as Executive Committee really hope that you will be able to attend this seminar. We made sure that no major rugby matches take place in Pretoria that specific Saturday.

Another important reason to attend this specific meeting is the fact that directors for the newly founded Article 21 Company need to be chosen from the members.

Our treasurer, Dr. Hennie Pienaar, will present the financial overview with present financial status.

We would like to make use of this newsletter to urge you to pay your yearly contribution. There are unfortunately enrolled members who have not paid for a number of years. It has been decided that these members after several attempts, will have their membership suspended if they do not react to pleas to pay the membership fees. The membership fees stay the same as last year, which in itself is remarkable, realising what is happening with fees and contributions all around us. The membership fees are mainly meant to cover costs of both seminars and enable the Executive Committee to expand their horizon concerning the asking of speakers and expansion beyond the Pretoria / Johannesburg area.

As Executive Committee we had in mind to organise a seminar like this in Cape Town and possibly in Durban to enable medical and legal colleagues interested in the same medico-legal matters to attend a likewise meeting.

As Executive Committee we further deliberated about the provoking thoughts of Professor Gert Saayman, Forensic Pathologist, one of our previous honoured speakers and a member of our Society to be more relevant to society and to broaden our sphere of influence with respect to several aspects of our South African Medico Legal Society, to have a positive impact.

There are in fact in many fields so many possibilities that indeed our Society could take a leading role, keeping in mind our highly qualified members.

With the next newsletter the specifics of our first seminar of 07 May 2005 will be confirmed and repeated. Start spreading the news in order to have a successful and relevant meeting.

Best wishes

Your president

DR & ADV ANTON H VAN DEN BOUT
