NEWSLETTER – MARCH 2007

Dear Colleagues and Friends

The New Year 2007 has already progressed to the point where our committee has looked at the coming seminar in May with a subject and speakers. We are proud to announce that we have decided on an ethical subject about stem cells and the whole idea around this important medical development as well as the legal implications. We therefore invite you to our next seminar with the following particulars

Subject: Stem Cells

Speakers: Medical:- Prof M Pepper – head of the Netcells Research Centre, one of South Africa’s foremost experts in this field

Legal: - Prof Pieter Carsten, Prof Melodie Slabbert and Adv Magdaleen Swanepoel (These last two speakers are very involved with the legal side of stem cells and in the coming legislation in that respect.)

Date: Saturday 26 May 2007

Place: Board room of Rooth & Wessels Attorneys in Brooklyn, Pretoria

If necessary a bigger venue can be arranged. It is therefore important that you RSVP before 11 May 2007 to Mrs Ronell van Vuuren 012 452 4036

Time: 09:00 to 13:00

The SAMLS is particularly proud about the fact that this panel of speakers were available to speak at our seminar the moment they were approached. This is surely not to be missed as stem cells every now and again make the headlines in our newspapers and scientific publications all over the world. Make sure that you will be there!! DIARISE THE DATE!

Another exciting development is the completion of the book by Prof Pieter Carstens, (Head of Medical Law, University of Pretoria and of the unit of Medicine and Law at UNISA) and co-authors. This most comprehensive work every undertaken in South Africa will be on the bookshelves shortly. It will already be available before our seminar on stem cells. A chapter in this book is about stem cells. We as committee of the SAMLS strongly recommend that you buy this standard medico legal book and reference guide and are even of the opinion that it should be acquired by every law firm, advocate and medico legal specialist. This monumental work that will be revised every two years will in a short time be the reference work in all medico legal work. Mark my words!

It is a good that there is a renewed and rejuvenated interest in medico legal subjects. There should however be a central organising body that co-ordinate the activities. Lets keep it well organised as a Third World country should do and improve our efforts and stimulate knowledge about this science of medicine and law in a co-ordinated manner.

We are proud of our branch in Cape Town that will organise their own seminars and we are sure that Durban will follow shortly with constituting a branch and co-ordinating medico legal interests in Kwa Zulu Natal. Let us together bring the practice and knowledge of medico legal matters on a higher level that promotes our SAMLS constitution’s goals diligently as published on our well organised website www.samls.co.za

One of the efforts we can mention regarding our society was the making of representations to the committee that should revise the law about Third Parties This was done by our secretary Dr. Dave Barnes and one of our directors Dr Herman Edeling. Although new legislation has been proposed this is of such a nature that our Society decided to strongly object to the proposals as they are totally unpractical as well as a disaster for managing the claims of Road Accident Fund claimants. This letter of object will be written by our director Dr. Herman Edeling and will be published on our website.

More news and data will follow shortly. You can expect another newsletter in April this year.

Best wishes

Your president

DR & ADV ANTON H VAN DEN BOUT
