NEWSLETTER – MAY 2006
Dear Colleagues and Friends
Although we were a bit quiet recently, it does not mean that nothing is happening. Behind the scene discussions took place and important decisions in principle were decided upon. It is a definite fact now that expansion of our Society’s activities to the Cape Province and possibly Natal will take place.
We as Society are honoured that Patrick van den Heever, a doctorate in law and active legal practitioner in Cape Town from the legal firm Millers Attorneys, has applied for membership of our Society. Both his and Dr. Moya Joseph Nkosi’s, a dentist from Cape Town, applications have been granted.
We as EXCO are very happy to announce that our next seminar’s particulars are as follows:-
Subject: Quantum of Damages
Speakers: Both an experienced lawyer as well as an actuary are being approached to address us on this matter
Date: 22 July 2006
Place: Board room of Rooth & Wessels Attorneys in Brooklyn, Pretoria
Time: 09:00 to 13:00
Although somewhat later in the year than usual, the subject of this seminar promises to be very interesting and worthwhile to attend, both for the legal and medical members of our Society. Useful and important directions will be given to medical experts concerning medico legal reports to bring these up to the standard that can be expected from our SAMLS members. We will keep you informed about the speakers of this seminar in a follow-up newsletter. Important changes to the Third Party scene will also be discussed, as well as the consequences for our legal and medical fraternity.
This very same seminar of Pretoria will serve as a blue print for the first seminar in the Cape somewhat later this year and possibly the first seminar in Natal. Our Society indeed is spreading its wings and considerable value will be added by these regional meetings, both concerning the knowledge valuable for medico legal practicing as well as the extension of numbers of medico-legal practitioners involved in these activities.
Concerning the registration of our Society as an Article 21 company, we as EXCO are happy to announce that this has been finalised. I myself will serve initially as the Public Officer and further requirements of SARS will be met as well. An AGM is being planned. The date of this meeting will be finalised as soon as our financial statements have been audited, which will be very soon. A special thanks goes to our treasurer, Dr. Hennie Pienaar who undertook this difficult task to collect information of years gone by and instruct auditors to draft these statements. For sure not an easy thing to do, as our organization’s documentation was more or less informal up to now.
We are still updating our website with useful information, all the details of our members as well as useful links to other websites. Please visit our site and supply us with constructive ideas about the never-ending process of upgrading. We are however already proud of our achievements up to now and are quite sure of the high standards compared to other professional sites, even worldwide.
As EXCO we appreciate that our members are very busy with their own activities, but we urge each and every one of you to spend some time contemplating mission and purpose of our Society and spend some of your valuable time supplying us with constructive ideas. We as Medico Legal Society are here to stay and are totally convinced of our pivotal role it plays in present and more so future developments in the medico-legal field of our beloved country.
The next newsletter, as already promised, will be before our seminar on 22 July 2006 and will contain some worthwhile legal news from some of our members as well.
Best wishes
Your president
